PHD thesis of Philipp Spörl successfully defended
On September 12th, 2024, Philipp Spörl successfully defended his PhD thesis as part of the TecEUS project. His thesis, titled "Exploring the Effectiveness of Façade Greening in Reducing Particulate Matter Pollution in Urban Environments," was presented in a 30-minute session, followed by an examination led by his supervisor, Ulrike Pitha, alongside Azra Korjenic and Rosemarie Stangl, who chaired the examination committee.
Philipp's presentation focused on his two publications as first author and the synthesis of both. In addition, he presented a transfer of the findings from the publications to the European region with a focus on Vienna.
His work includes a fundamental investigation of façade greening to reduce particulate matter and the development of a measuring instrument as well as a possible solution for future projects. His work provides a fundamental base for future measurements in the field of façade greening and particulate matter.
In the subsequent discussion, the importance of interdisciplinary approaches was emphasized, as well as the need for suggestions for improvement for future measurements. The combination of field studies, laboratory investigations or wind tunnel studies as well as computational fluid dynamic simulations was particularly emphasized to be able to generate transferable results in the future.
The TecEUS consortium congratulates Philipp to this milestone in his career.
